biography

Yatfung (a.k.a. Chet Lam / 林一峰) is a globally minded singer-songwriter, producer, writer, and cultural storyteller whose career transcends borders, languages, and genres. His work bridges orchestral scale and intimate songwriting, translating memory, migration, and cultural legacy into a contemporary sonic language.

Emerging from a celebrated songbook series that established him as one of the defining voices in Chinese-language music, Yatfung has spent more than two decades shaping a body of work that moves fluidly between stripped-down lyricism and cinematic orchestration. His music reflects a life shaped by travel—over 80 countries and counting—and by an ongoing dialogue between cultures, histories, and identities.

Fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, Yatfung embodies the spirit of a modern musical nomad. His performances range from intimate acoustic storytelling to large-scale orchestral collaborations, each guided by a deep commitment to emotional authenticity and lyrical precision.

Born in Hong Kong, Yatfung built his career through creative independence and entrepreneurial vision. In 2003 he founded LYFE Music, an independent label that became the platform for his expansive body of work. Since then, he has released more than 25 studio albums across multiple languages, authored nine bestselling books, and produced concerts for both himself and emerging artists in the independent music scene.

A highly respected songwriter, Yatfung has written for some of the most influential artists in Asian pop music, including Eason Chan, Stefanie Sun, Dadawa, and Gigi Leung. Yatfung’s work has already accumulated 150 million streaming times on major platforms outside of Mainland China.

His work has received wide recognition, including Best Cantonese Album at the 2023 Wave Music Awards, Best Folk Singer at the Top Chinese Music Awards (2012 and 2016), multiple Album of the Year (Cantonese) honors at the Chinese Music Media Awards, and Best Original Film Song at the Golden Horse Film Festival.

In 2015 Yatfung founded MusicBee.cc, a pioneering crowdfunding platform supporting independent Chinese musicians. Within two years, the platform raised nearly HK$6 million, enabling nearly 30 original music projects to come to life.

Yatfung’s explorative artistic vision has also led to acclaimed collaborations with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, notably in 2016 and 2019. These concerts fused global folk influences with Chinese orchestral traditions and were performed in six languages, earning both critical and popular acclaim.

In 2025 Yatfung expanded his international presence with headline performances at the Hong Kong Pop Culture Music Festival in Singapore and Phnom Penh, followed by his U.S. debut at Le Poisson Rouge in New York’s historic Greenwich Village and a headline appearance at Toronto’s legendary Horseshoe Tavern.

Through music, writing, and cross-cultural collaboration, Yatfung continues to explore how songs can carry memory, identity, and emotional truth across borders.
